Get Off The Page

Being an instrumentalist does not equate to simply playing your instrument. It means so much more.

We are in recital season, so I think about this a lot. There are so many talented instrumentalists, but it stops at that. Being a musician means getting off the page, snooping around in the pianist part, nudging the violinist, and swooning your vocalist on stage.

I’ve spent the past few hours simply studying the piano score to one of the works I’m performing on my recital. There is a ton of information there, everything you need, all in a score.

How odd it is, to me at least, for instrumentalist to learn their part and no one else’s. How do you expect to grow? Or make music?
